Pair of Leather Monkey Figures 1930’s

Pair of cheeky monkeys

An interesting and rare pair of monkey figures that we just love.

The basic facts are these figures are of a relatively heavy base material for their size covered with a layer of leather, nothing more complicated than that.

To us, what makes these two stand out is the leather labels to the underside. Both have been written by the same hand in ink and reads as……’Hand made 1930 in leather H.E. Jackman MC Patronised by Her Majesty the Queen’

Our research has so far established that the reference to the Queen at this time must be Queen Mary. H.E. Jackman  served in WWI with 21st Btln London Rgt and on Sept 28th 1918 promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. At some point during his military service he was awarded the Military Cross.

So far that is the limit to our findings. We are sure with some further research more of the makers life story can be unfolded. The main question we would like answered is were these made as a hobby, perhaps a small cottage enterprise or in our opinion most likely was Lt Jackman a wounded soldier taught new skills for life outside of the military?

As we said at the beginning, we love these cheeky chaps and knowing that small snippet of history makes them all the more evocative.
