A fantastic pair of pole screens dated circa 1830/40.
Triform base in ebony supported on squat bun feet with a crisply carved column. The poles are embellished with decorative mounts to top and bottom. Beautiful papier mache panels decorated in a chinoiserie style depict a European view of Oriental life.
Originally intended for use in front of an open fire to protect the make up and complexion of ladies. The panels being height adjustable on the pole to provide the optimum shield from the hearth.
